Why Is It Advisable To Treat The Soil With General Fertiliser Before Sowing The Grass Seed?
fertiliser and fresh seed dont mix as the seeds germinating may burn due to high fertiliser content so by spreading it prior it weakens as it dissolves in to the ground

That middle number on the fertilizer bag is phosphorus which does not move through the soil as well as say, nitrogen. So having it in the root zone to begin with makes it available to the plant immediately.
Personally if I were to mix in fertilizer at seeding, I’d use a fertilizer designed for this as the nitrogen will be in a slow release formulation, that is “tiny time pills” that dissolve gradually. A fast release nitrogen, say ammonium sulfate 23-0-0 will leach through the soil with the extra water being applied or release too fast and burn the roots.
if the fertilizer says weed &feed or grab grass control do not put it down with new seed. reason is the weed/crabgrass control ingredient will stop the new seed from germinating. use only a stater filters or one with no weed control in it.margolite is the one i like to use but any good starter fertilizer will work fine
Apply a good quality fertilizer, preferably with an analysis on
a 1-2-1 ratio, the middle number representing the proportion of phosphorous. This will assist in developing a healthy root system.
when reseeding we mixed seed with lawn fertilizer 29-0-8 in the spreader as directed on the seed container.
